ABOUT ROMYR

Come get away on the shore of Michigan's most beautiful lake in our rustic log cabin. Kids love swimming in the clear turquoise waters and playing on the big sandy private beach. Parents kick back and gaze at the grades of color in the crystal clear water. Couples get cozy in front of a fire in the massive fireplace. At night enjoy billions of stars, and then roast marshmallows at a bonfire on the beach.

The cabin, built in the 1930s by our grandfather and named "Romyr" after his two children (Robert and Myrna), still retains its original charm. It sleeps up to eight, sits on 200 feet of shoreline (a double lot), and is 350 feet from the road to ensure privacy. It has two bedrooms (each with a double bed), a loft with four single beds, a kitchen, a living room (with a large fireplace), an eating porch, and a bathroom and foyer. Outside is a large deck with picnic table, propane grill, Adirondack chairs, and stone buffet. On the water--just a short walk down the hill from the deck--is large sandy beach with chairs and a fire pit. On the other side of the property is a dock with boat lift. We also have a mooring and a rowboat to get to and fro.

Our caretaker lives nearby and makes sure Romyr is ready for your arrival.

ABOUT TORCH LAKE

As the story goes, Torch Lake was once rated the third most beautiful lake in the world by National Geographic. Apocryphal as that may be, Torch remains a gorgeous body of water. Like the Great lakes, Torch Lake was made when glaciers gouged out the deep trench that is now its bottom, and piled up steep banks all around its shores. Over 300 ft deep, the bottom falls in distinct steps, and these "drop-offs" produce beautiful grades of color, from light green, to aqua, to azure. Underwater springs provide water that is clear to over 15 feet.

Torch Lake is three miles wide, 17 miles long, and is part of the Chain O' Lakes. Romyr is a member of the Three Lakes Association, which preserves and protects these lakes.

Romyr sits on the southwest part of the lake, not far from Deepwater Point and about two miles from the famous sandbar.

The area is surrounded by cherry orchards and birch forests that have trilliums blanketing the floor in the spring. Traverse City is about 40 minutes away by car.

CABIN AMENITIES

The cabin comes with high speed internet, a supply of firewood, towels and linens (except beach towels) for 8 people, a deck with a propane grill, picnic table, and Adirondack chairs, and a dock with a boat lift. The kitchen has everything you'll need, including a full-size stove and refrigerator, a microwave and coffeemaker. (There is also an antique cast-iron waffle maker!) The beach is sandy but the water bottom has small pebbles, so consider water shoes for those with sensitive feet.

The family enjoys Romyr for a few weeks every year. We rent Romyr for the other weeks of summer/fall, and we have done so for over 20 years; two sets of renters have come every one of those years, others come periodically. They have become our extended Romyr family. Still, there are many weeks available each year for first-time renters.

Keep in mind that Romyr is a rustic cabin. It has no central heating, no air conditioning, no dishwasher, no laundry facilities, and the tap water comes from the lake. While the water is safe for showering and washing dishes (and some of the family drinks it), we urge you to drink bottled water. There are some locations nearby where you can pump your own for free.
